Superintendent Search Committee Update

At its October 12 meeting, the School Committee appointed the members of the Superintendent Search Committee proposed by the sub-committee of Helen Cohen and Tom Diaz.

Cohen and Diaz reported that the 25 parents and community members who applied for the Committee were all highly qualified, and expressed appreciation for all those who were willing to serve the community in this vital role. They made their selection according to criteria of experience in education, experience in management and human resource issues, experience in finance, and diversity. Several applicants had to withdraw because of time conflicts and constraints.

The Committee members are: Helen Cohen and Tom Diaz for the School Committee; Elaine Sterzin for the Central Office; Lynne Stinson, Joanne Hennessy, and Michael Jones for building administrators; Edward Davey, Norma Gordon, Len Swanton and Deb Perry for faculty; Vita LaMura for the union; Evelyn Silber for the Personnel Advisory Board; and parent/community members Susan Bennett, Thomas Campbell, Jean Cole, Sue Cusack, Tim Dugan, Elizabeth Frank, Darith Phat, and Richard Schaye. There will also be a representative from the town administration.

Because of the large size of the Committee, the work of resume reading, preparing questions for the semi-finalist interviews, and conducting those interviews will be shared out among the members. The first meeting, for orientation and training by Richard Warren, consultant from Future Management Systems, takes place this week.

Because of a commitment to confidentiality for potential Superintendent applicants, the Committee will not be reporting names to the public until it chooses the finalists in mid-December. The finalists will then be interviewed in public sessions by the School Committee in January. The School Committee hopes to announce the name of our next Superintendent by early February. That person will begin work in Lexington on July 1. Our interim Superintendent, William Hurley, will serve until June 30.

The School Committee is currently reviewing the results of the focus groups held in September and October, compiled by FMS, to develop a profile for the Superintendent position. Please contact Helen Cohen (863-1279; ) with any questions or suggestions you have about the process and about what you want to see in our next Superintendent.

INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT APPOINTMENT
